2005 Jaguar XK8 Coupe with 71k Miles

For July 18, 2020, our used car find is this 71k mile 2005 Jaguar XK8 coupe, which is listed on eBay by a private seller in Sonoma, California, for $14,500.

Here’s what makes this car special.

Introduction

The X100 series XK was introduced in 1996 as the successor to the long-lived XJS. With gorgeous lines penned by the legendary Ian Callum, as well as a potent V8 engine, it caused quite a stir, especially the XKR variant, with an added Eaton supercharger that upped the power significantly. At the time, Car and Driver noted, “[It] represents some real value in comparison with other high-end performance cars such as the eerily similar Aston Martin DB7.”

This example comes from the final two model years for the X100, which means that it benefits from all of the improvements made throughout its ten-year run, including numerous styling upgrades, a revised and enlarged V8 engine, and a 6-speed automatic gearbox (which added a cog in 2002).

The Listing

The car offered here is just the “base” XK8, sans supercharger, but as the seller notes in his well-written listing, these grand tourers are better suited to spirited backroad cruises than they are to track day outings, so we don’t think you’ll miss the extra power very much. Even in naturally-aspirated spec, Jag’s AJ34 V8 generates nearly 300 hp and a more than ample 303 lb-ft of torque.

Most buyers opted for convertible version of the XK8, making coupes like this one relatively rare. In fact, fewer than 1000 were made during its final two years. Even rarer still are examples as well-kept as this one, which still looks basically new inside and out, despite having done over 70k miles.

This coupe is listed on eBay, with a buy-it-now price of $14,900, which reflects the car’s unusually nice condition. That’s about 30% higher than KBB’s high estimate for one of these. So unless you’re absolutely smitten, we’d suggest pursing it via bidding instead. As long as the reserve isn’t too aggressive, that could save you a few thousand bucks.

But even at full price, it’s still a heck of a lot of car for the money.
