2009 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 V8 with 52k Miles

2009 Hyundai Genesis 4.6

For December 6, 2020, our used car find is this low-mile, one-owner 2009 Hyundai Genesis sedan with the optional 368 hp 4.6 liter V8 engine. It’s offered on craigslist by a private seller in the Sacramento area for $12,800.

Here’s what makes this one special.

Introduction

Hyundai launched the Genesis sedan at the 2008 North American Auto Show as a 2009 model. A front-engine, rear-drive luxury sedan with an available V8 engine, it was quite the departure from the South Korean automaker’s economy car playbook — closer to a 5 Series BMW than a humble Hyundai Excel.

At its debut, the Genesis sported not just a front-engine, rear-drive platform but also standard luxury features like leather upholstery, heated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and even a power rear sunshade. Hyundai also splurged on a multilink suspension front and rear, a brand-new DOHC all-aluminum V8 engine, making 368 hp (or 375 hp if you spring for premium gas), and a ZF-sourced 6-speed automatic gearbox.

The gamble paid off. As Car and Driver noted in an early review, “There’s no question that, in general, Hyundai’s development team checked the right boxes for their ambitious leap to this high-stakes, high-profit game.” And shoppers have snapped up enough of them to keep the Genesis alive and well through today. Though it’s now known as the Genesis G80, the basic formula of a German-quality sport sedan at a discount price remains the same.

The Listing

This particular example is exactly what you want to find in a used Genesis: relatively low miles, a clean Carfax report, and a complete history of dealership service. Its clean lines look handsome, if not a bit bland, in the original Platinum Metallic factory paint, and the black leather interior with brown accents is Restoration Hardware chic.

After a decade on the road, this Genesis has depreciated about 75% from its original MSRP of almost forty grand, which means the lightly-used specimen is offered at $12,800. That’s a touch on the high side of KBB’s range for one in this condition. We think something closer to $10,000 would be well bought.

No matter how you slice it, that’s a lot of car for the money.
