With R129 generation prices starting to creep up (and some rarer examples selling for over $20k on Bring a Trailer), examples of the following SL generation, dubbed R230, are starting to look pretty compelling.
Take this AMG-tuned SL55, for instance. With just 50k miles, one owner, and a like-new appearance inside and out, it’s exactly what you’d look for in a used Mercedes. At $19,750, it’s priced just a few grand more than an R129 in comparable condition. However, with the magic of supercharging, it also puts out nearly 500 hp – notably more than any production R129 ever did.
Of course, the R129 is a simpler car and isn’t subject to Active Body Control problems or other such complexities of R230 ownership. However as R230s have aged, aftermarket suppliers have arrived on the scene to provide better and cheaper support than you might expect.
Plus, of course, the R230s have more modern car amenities like improved safety, better brakes, better headlights, more creature comforts, and so on.
It’s an interesting trade off, and one that is starting to lean more in the R230’s favor, I think.
This one’s offered on Autotrader HERE by a private seller in the San Diego area for $19,750, which is a good price assuming there are no issues lurking.
