This early W209 generation CLK500 is pretty much everything that I look for in used car bargain.
The styling might not be for everyone, but I think it’s holding up pretty well. The more aggressive wheels that come with the upscale 500 trim definitely help.
And speaking of the 500 trim, that of course indicates the 5 liter M113 V8, which puts out 302 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque – a considerable sum for the era and even today, especially for a relatively small car. Sixty mph comes in 5.7 seconds, which is plenty quick.
Even better, the M113 mill and the 722.6 5-speed automatic it’s attached to are both some of the most robust offered by Benz in the modern era. (Later years got the more problematic M273 V8 and 722.9 gearbox.)
To top it off, this example’s also a one-owner SoCal car that’s done just 50k miles – plus it’s been dealer serviced it’s whole life, with the most recent visit (according to the history report) coming just a few weeks ago.
I’d say all that for $8000 is a cracking deal (if I’m channeling my inner James May).
It’s offered on craigslist HERE by a private seller in Orange County. If I were in the market for a stylish, comfy, and long-lived daily driver, I’d be all over it.
