Here’s another sub-$5000 gem. This second-to-last year W124 sedan features the chassis’ final upgrades, including a handsome front-end redo with flush Euro headlights, as well as the excellent m104 inline six putting out a healthy 217 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque. It also appears to be a very well-maintained example, which the Chicago-area seller claims is “ready to drive anywhere.” It even has new Michelins fitted, always a good sign.
Given the car’s location, I would suggest an inspection for corrosion, though the W124 chassis is pretty robust and may with so few miles have escaped it. While you’re at it, check to see whether the original wiring harness has been replaced. If not, factor that into your ownership costs going forward – plus potentially a new head gasket at some point. Both are well worth the investment over the long haul to keep such an elegant and well-made machine on the road, especially considering the insanely cheap acquisition cost.
