1993 Honda Accord EX Coupe with 45k Miles

For October 25, 2020, our used car find is this 1993 Honda Accord EX coupe with just 45k miles. Offered by a small dealership in the Boston area, this Accord represents the last year of the fourth generation of Honda’s ridiculously popular model.

Here’s what makes this one special.

Introduction

Debuting for the 1990 model year and succeeding the hugely successful third-generation (1986-1989), the fourth-gen Accord was Honda at the height of its powers. Back then, the company was known for turning out meticulously engineered cars that were built like Swiss watches.

The fourth-gen Accord brought fuel injection and 4-valves per cylinder technology as standard across the line. Rated at 125 hp (DX, LX) or 140 hp (EX, SE), the Accord’s 2.2-liter four wasn’t a pavement scorcher but happily gave its all in a smooth, unflustered, and spirited fashion. Nimble handling was also part of the car’s impressive resume, as were good fuel economy and a legendary record for reliability and longevity.

The fourth-gen Accord’s crisp, neatly-tailored styling was both attractive and functional. Employing the company’s then trademark styling elements of a low beltline, slim roof pillars, and large glass area, the Accord provided excellent outward visibility.

Other praise-worthy characteristics of Honda at the time included high-quality interiors with firm, supportive seats, large instruments, simple and logical controls, and overall build quality that would’ve made a high-end luxury brand proud. Indeed, with its stellar handling and engaging driving personality compared to its peers, it’s no wonder some car buffs called the Accord the Japanese BMW, especially when equipped with Honda’s butter-smooth 5-speed stick.

Back then, the Accord’s trim level hierarchy went from the base DX, to the nicely-equipped LX (power windows/locks, A/C, AM/FM/Cassette), to the luxury-level EX, which also added the more powerful engine noted above, 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, a power sunroof, and alloy wheels. During the ‘80s and ‘90s, if it was the last year of a given generation, there was also a Special Edition version (SE) that upped the luxury quotient with leather seating and a Bose sound system.

The Listing

Located at a used car lot that boasts excellent reviews on Yelp, this ’93 Accord EX coupe looks tempting, at least on our laptops. Its overall condition seems to support the 45k actual miles claim. With the exception of the somewhat scuffed factory alloy wheels (we’d get them refinished), it looks like a very well-maintained, original car complete in a 1990s shade of green color that we happen to love. The interior — especially the driver’s seat bolsters, the door panels, and the carpeting — could pass for that of a three-year old, well-kept car.

The vehicle history report shows a one-owner, accident-free history, but as with any older car you’ll want to get this one checked out by a specialist before pulling the trigger (especially since we noticed the hood fit being slightly off on the passenger side). We’d also prefer a manual gearbox to up the fun factor.

Still, it’s not every day you come across a low-mileage, fourth-gen Accord EX coupe. The $8,000 price may seem steep, but given the mileage, condition, desirability, and “try to find another like this” factor, we’d definitely check out this EX coupe if we were in the market for a, dare we say, “classic” Honda.
